What are the types or classification of software (programs)?

The basic classification is: system software and application software.

The system software is the basic software or operating system. Is a set of programs designed to facilitate computer use (isolated from the complexities of each device, and presents outside a common model management system for all devices) and get them to use efficiently (eg operations while runs a program). Manages and allocates system resources (hardware).

On the other hand, the application software are programs that monitor and optimize the operation of the machine, set a basic and fundamental between the user and the computer, make the user can use conveniently and friendly complex hardware systems, perform User functions would be cumbersome or even impossible, and act as an intermediary between the user and the hardware.

Are written / modified by computer programmers who have deep knowledge about how the machine actually works. Is normally provided as part of the machine by the supplier
